I will get your registration cancelled from PCI: VK Singh to The Typewriter

In an intimidating act, Director General of Police (DGP) Prisons, VK Singh has apparently threatened the Editor of The Typewriter for reporting against ‘mismanagement’ at Central Jail Kotbalwal, Jammu.

In a telephonic conversation (recording in possession of The Typewriter), DGP Prisons can be clearly heard of intimidating editor of The Typewriter with dire consequences for his reporting against access of mobile phones to the inmates of Central Jail Kotbalwal, Jammu.

“I want to warn you because the type of item you are projecting is against national interest,” said DGP Prisons, adding that they are writing to CID with a copy to ACB to get credential of the journalist checked.

Instead of rebutting the story, regarding access of mobile phones to the jail inmates, with facts, the DGP Prisons resorted to unparliamentary language.

Conversation between the Editor, The Typewriter and VK Singh.

“You are writing things which are not true, you have got mobile numbers which are operated by inmates, did you give those numbers to anybody,” quipped VK Singh, accusing the journalist of asking money.

He further threatened the journalist of putting him on record with the local Station House Officer (SHO).

“I will put you on record with the local SHO and get your credentials checked from CID and Anti Crime Branch,” rued VK Singh, warning that he will get Typewriter shut and will take the editor of Typewriter to task and get this paper cancelled from Press Council of India.

It is pertinent to mention here that The Typewriter had reported how inmates of Central Jail Kot Bhalwal are using mobile phones and internet. It was reported that the jail inmates have easy and almost free access to the mobile phones and internet facility.

It is not out of place to mention herein that it is the same Jail from where JeM, Chief Maulana Masood Azhar was freed in an exchange for hijacked passengers of IC-814 flight in December 1999. It still houses a large number of dreaded terrorists here in Jammu, informed official, adding that JeM Commander, Abdul Rehman Mughal along with three other associates was lodged inside the barrack and remained in touch with his handlers across Pakistan with the help of these mobile phones.

As a matter of record, before filing this story, the reporter had contacted the Director General of Police (Prisons), VK Singh about his response over the issue but he out-rightly refused to comment.
