The Jammu and Kashmir Police department allegedly stands accused of orchestrating a cover-up to protect Sub-Inspector Mohd Bashir Malik, a suspended officer who reportedly fled a CBI trap.
According to highly placed sources within the police, a senior police officer of Jammu district is allegedly shielding Sub-Inspector Mohd Bashir Malik, who dramatically fled a CBI trap laid for demanding a Rs 50,000 bribe while serving as Investigating Officer at RS Pura Police Station.
“Mockery of the system was exposed when the accused Sub Inspector surrendered days later only to secure interim bail on July 31, 2025, and absolute bail on August 12, 2025,” said sources, adding that after few days of his full release, Bashir was quietly relieved from RS Pura via an outdated transfer order to the Crime Branch – a move that reeks of an orchestrated escape route, bypassing standard protocols and raising damning questions about senior officers’ complicity in protecting corrupt elements.
If sources are to be believed, this isn’t Bashir’s first brush with scandal.
Earlier in march 2025, while posted as In-Charge of Police Post Sidhra under Nagrota Police Station, he was implicated in FIR No. 58/2025, spending over 12 days in police custody and one to two in judicial remand.
“Suspended briefly, he was reinstated within days and reassigned to RS Pura as IO, where he handled sensitive cases – including FIR No. 107/2025 and demanded bribes in this case to manipulate the probe resulting CBI trap,” alleged sources.
Police sources questioned why was an officer fresh from custody entrusted with high-stakes investigations?
“The CBI’s July 4 trap at RS Pura unraveled this web when Bashir accepted the bribe, which is recorded in CCTV cameras of the police station RS Pura, but bolted with the cash, evading capture in a scene straight out of a thriller,” said sources, adding that registered under FIR No. RC0042025A0009 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, the case exposed not just individual greed but a potential conspiracy involving family members of the deceased aiding his evasion.
Sources claimed that Jammu SSP Joginder Singh had confirmed the trap but offered no explanation for how a Sub Inspector senior slipped away from his own station.
Police sources further asserted that senior officers typically issue follow-up directives to enforce transfers, as subordinates often drag their feet. Here, the process was eerily “silent,” with no resistance or public announcement.
“Now posted as Munshi in a sensitive wing of the Crime Branch – handling classified files on special cases – Bashir’s placement creates apprehensions about evidence tampering and compromised investigations,” said sources, adding that with retirement looming in months, is this a cushy landing spot or a deliberate blind eye to his rap sheet?
Talking to The Typewriter, a senior officer of an anti-graft body, wishing anonymity said that the accused cop has been rightly placed to work under the surveillance of camera.
An internal inquiry has been launched, confirmed by SP Operations, Jammu Kameshwar Puri, who stonewalled further details, citing the ongoing probe.
When contacted SSP Jammu, Joginder Singh said that he cannot talk about the matter over phone.
